What's In A Name?

 What’s in a name?

‘The Way Back Shack’ is an odd name for a business. So what made me choose it?

Basically, it’s in homage to the back yard garden shed. For that’s where many hobbies are carried out and where more than a few businesses start from.

30 odd years ago, when I started painting, it was in a Portakabin in the back of the yard. It was a workshop, somewhere where my record collection lived and somewhere I’d go to indulge in my hobby of playing so many of my records.

Years later in Weymouth, my shed in the garden was where my tools, my paint, my golf clubs and my records lived. So, as you can see, there’s a recurring theme continuing here.

And a few years ago, when I decided to start painting again, I bought a shed for the back garden to use again. Sadly it was a bit too small for my needs, so it was converted into a sewing room for Debz compete with workbench, storage, electric, carpets, heating and comfortable chair. It’s even got net curtains!

I ended up clearing our rubbish-filled garage and converting part of that into somewhere for me to paint.

I liked the thought of naming a business after the shed, but ‘shed’ is a bit of a rubbish name to have in the title.

I then remembered a friend of mine, a Canadian radio Presenter, Don McEachern, during his radio shows used to talk about ‘the shack out back’ where he kept all his records. I liked that.

And so I took his idea and thought of a name that would pay tribute to the ‘shed in the back garden’ and so ‘The Way Back Shack’ name was born.

Not only is it ‘way back’ in the garden, but also, both myself and Debz are lovers of all things retro and vintage...you know ‘way back’ in time. So the name seems apt.

And in our little online shop, at the moment, are plenty of print designs that I've done. In time, that could well expand into other things of interest, especially if they’re old, cool and quirky...just like us.

And now you know, that’s how ‘The Way Back Shack’ got its name.
